Can you use an iPod nano usb cord for an ipod touch?

My dog chewed my original ipod cord but I had a nano so can I use that cord to sync my ipod to my computer? I've been trying but it hasn't been working so am I doing something wrong? It doesn't connect to the computer at all, it doesn't show up and the ipod has no sign of connection to my computer. what do i do?
